In 2014 Stuart Cairns became the first applied artist to receive the Rosemary James Memorial award, Place and Process represents the culmination of the research he undertook with the support of the award. In this installation Cairns translates his experiences of walking, collecting and making over the past year through a large experimental composition.
Exploring a sense of place through the rhythms of found objects, mark making and made things set as an installation in the main gallery in R-Space. This central installation is accompanied by supporting works of photography and drawing, set as a holistic reflection of Cairns’ practice.
I first met Stuart at an exhibition featuring a piece from the ‘Through the Mill‘ series and had the pleasure of working with him on a series of video and still documentary pieces covering ‘The Things that fall in-between‘.
Stuart Cairns is an applied artist based in County Down, Northern Ireland. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree In Silversmithing and Jewellery from the University of Ulster in 2000, returning to complete a Masters degree in 2006. He is a member of the British Designer Silversmiths and a part-time lecturer at the University of Ulster.
Cairns has exhibited widely; selected exhibitions include Side to Side, The National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny, Ireland 2015, Setting the Scene, The Craft Study Centre, Farnham, England [2013], Collect , The Saatchi Gallery 2012, Fit For Purpose, The V & A, London (2012) and the Linen Diaspora and the 4th Biennale Internationale du Lin de Portneuf, Quebec (2011). His work has been purchased for both public and private collections including the University of Ulster, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The Ulster Museum.
